Mild Resolution Adopted Over USS Vincennes

On this day in 1988, the UN Security Council adopted a mild resolution regarding the downing of an Iranian airliner by the USS Vincennes, which caused the instant death of 290 people, including 66 children. The resolution merely expresses deep distress and profound regret for the loss of innocent lives. The text does not criticize of the United States for its action in the Persian Gulf.Tehran's representative at the UN had demanded an apology from the United States, legal reparations to the families of the victims and the immediate departure of US forces from the Gulf region.
