Lockerbie Secret Document Confirmed

On Friday, OhmyNews International revealed the content, as well as the country of origin, of a secret document that constitutes one of the key issues being debated at the second extraordinary appeal of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing.OMNI alleged that the document was the debriefing by the German BKA (Federal Criminal Police Office) of Iranian defector Abolghasem Mesbahi, who claimed that Tehran, not Tripoli, had ordered the bombing of Pan Am 103. According to a source very knowledgeable about this affair, Germany passed the document to the United Kingdom on Sept. 13, 1996.The Westminster government has imposed a public interest immunity (PII) certificate in order to prevent the defense from seeing this secret document, which happens to be the very document that was used to justify the second appeal in the first place.Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who has signed the PII certificate, has told the judges that he believes releasing the secret document would cause "REAL HARM" to the national interest.
Within hours of the publication by OMNI, an insider, who wishes to remain anonymous for security reasons, contacted me. This source confirmed that OMNI had correctly identified the document and its country of origin. The source also tells me that the nature of an earlier meeting would unambiguously reveal the political nature of the indictments against Libya. Read full story

OhmyNews Identifies Secret Lockerbie Document

Last year, the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) granted the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing a second appeal on the basis that his conviction may have been unsafe. Among the grounds justifying the decision, the committee stated that the Crown had not given the defense access to a secret document which may be vital to establish the innocence of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi. The Westminster government, not the Lord Advocate, has imposed a Public Interest Immunity certificate in order to prevent the defense to see the very document which justifies the second appeal in the first place.
Very little is known about this document. We know that it was obtained from a foreign country, which is not the United States or one of its agencies. The document is rumored to obliterate the thesis of the bomb being activated by a MST-13 timer and the Thurman fragment. The government argues that the PII is needed, surprisingly not for National Security reasons, but to safeguard the good relation of the UK with the country that provided the document. Lastly, the document was passed to the UK in 1996. Yesterday, I was informed that the document was delivered on Sept. 13, 1996. The date leaves me with little doubt that the document is the testimony of Iranian defector Abolghasem Mesbahi who alleged that Tehran, not Tripoli, had ordered the bombing of Pan Am 103. Former Iranian President Blames Tehran for Lockerbie

In an interview conducted on May 16, Abolhassan Bani-Sadr, the former president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, told me that Tehran, not Libya, had ordered the bombing of Pan Am 103 in revenge for the downing of an Iranian civilian airliner by the USS Vincennes a few months earlier. On July 3, 1988, the navy cruiser USS Vincennes, also known as "Robocruiser," shot down Iran Air Flight 665 over the Persian Gulf. The civilian airliner was carrying mostly Muslims on their pilgrimage to Mecca -- 290 died, most Iranians.According to Bani-Sadr, in the immediate aftermath of the Lockerbie tragedy, Mohtashami-Pur, the then minister of the interior, acknowledged in an interview that he had contracted Ahmad Jibril, the leader of a Palestinian organization, to bomb an American airliner. The interview was scheduled for publication the following day. Hours before distribution, the newspaper was shutdown. Read full story

Lockerbie: The Doctor's Strange Story

Back in 1988, Dr. David Fieldhouse was a police surgeon from Bradford, Yorkshire. On Dec. 21, Fieldhouse heard about the crash of Pan Am 103 on "News at Ten." He immediately phoned the Lockerbie police station to volunteer his help and experience, which the Lockerbie Police eagerly accepted.
Minutes later, Fieldhouse was driving on the highway to Scotland and arrived to Lockerbie shortly before midnight. There, he reported to the police station. After having received his instructions, he was sent out with a police officer to find bodies and certify them dead."My work began after briefings and involved several square miles of the crash scene over a period of about 16 hours -- ending, as I recall, at about 1600 hours on 22nd December 1988."During those hours of the search for and confirmation of death in the case of many bodies, I was accompanied by one or more police officers at all times. We occasionally met others both during the night and the ensuing day," Fieldhouse told me. Read full story

Spielberg to Direct Lockerbie Bombing Movie

Legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg will direct a movie regarding the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am 103 over the town of Lockerbie in Scotland. The movie is an adaptation of the book Flight 103 written by former Israeli officer and MOSSAD agent Juval Aviv.
For several months, it has been rumored that Harrison Ford would play the central role of a retired Israeli agent, Sam Woolfman, who discovers that Tehran ordered the destruction of Pan Am 103. "Harrison has already played a similar character in 'Patriot Games' where he was Jack Ryan, a CIA agent who becomes embroiled in a terrorist plot," a Hollywood insider pointed out. It now appears that Spielberg has narrowed his choice for the job to two Scottish actors: Ewan McGregor and James McAvoy. The novel alleges that Tehran contracted a Palestinian terror group to carry the bombing and suggests that the CIA turned a blind eye on the plot because on the plane were US intelligence agents returning to the US from Lebanon to denounce a secret drugs-for-hostages deal between Washington and Tehran. Woolfman, and his glamorous young Irish assistant Orla Sheehy, received his first clue of the conspiracy when he discovered that US diplomats around the world had been told to cancel their reservations on Pan Am 103. Was There a Second Irangate?

Only half of the Iran-Contra affair has been told.--Amiram Nir, counterterrorism advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, point-man of Oliver North in the Iran-Contra operations, from an interview with Bob Woodward, Summer 1988
While reviewing some materials concerning various Iranian political events having occurred during the last years of Khomeini, I came across a fantastic piece of information which allows to identify with great probability, in fact with near certainty, the man previously only known as Witness C or by his alias Abolghasem Mesbahi. His true name is actually Abdul Hasan Mephahi. On Oct. 5, 1988, La Cinq, a French television network, mentioned Mephahi and informed their viewers that the Iranian diplomat had been expelled from France in 1983 for "activities not in keeping with diplomatic status."
...
Mehdi Hashemi, who had leaked the scandal to the media, was executed in 1987. Amiram Nir was assassinated on Dec. 1, 1988. Lt. Cmdr. R. J. Hunt told investigator R. Stitch that he had learned from Oliver North that Nir had been assassinated by the CIA because he was about to sell the story of the second Irangate.Gannon and McKee were US intelligence operatives working in Lebanon to release the US hostages. Both died on Pan Am 103. Both had worked with Nir on the security of Vice President Bush during his secret meeting with Iranian officials at the King David hotel in Jerusalem on July 29, 1986.Ian Spiro, a British citizen and US-MI6 Intelligence asset in the Lebanon, is one of the few people suspected to have betrayed Gannon and McKee and passed their travel plans to the Iranians the day prior the bombing of Pan Am 103.Spiro told journalists that he could link Irangate to Lockerbie. Soon after he left Lebanon, Spiro and his wife and three children were murdered in California. The San Diego Sheriff's Department never responded to an official request from Britain's Foreign Office for copies of a medical examiner's report on their unsolved deaths. In 1996, journalist Gary Webb published reports in the San Jose Mercury News claiming that Contras, with the protection of the Reagan administration, had distributed crack cocaine into Los Angeles to fund weapons purchases. In 2004, Gary Webb was found dead, officially having committing suicide. He shot himself twice in the head.In August 2002, Nidal, the man accused by Mephahi to have organized the bombing of Pan Am 103, also committed suicide by shooting a bullet in his mouth. According to Palestinian sources, which have seen his dead body, several bullets had entered the back of his head. Read full story

Lockerbie: The Man Who Was Not There

This case is not closed. The investigation continues, it has continued since the plane went down and it will continue until every individual who we can identify who played a role in this tragedy is brought to justice.US Acting Deputy Attorney General Bob MuellerJanuary 31, 2001 -- The day of the Lockerbie Verdict [1]"Did Iran contract with the PFLP-GC? Probably! But it cannot be proven in court. Did Iran ask Libya and Abu Nidal as you stated in an earlier article? Perhaps, but that too cannot be proven and never will be unless a reliable witness or two comes forward with documentary evidence," dais the FBI agent who lead the Lockerbie investigation, who wrote to me. [2]

Former FBI Special Agent Richard A. Marquise was the chief of Terrorist Research and Analytical Center at FBI Headquarters in the '80s. In 2001, Marquise received the Attorney General Award for Distinguished Service."With regard to the James Baker discussion with a Syrian intelligence minister in 1989, I have no doubt the conversation occurred. At the time we strongly suspected the PFLP-GC which was sponsored by Syria. Baker was one of those people who could distinguish evidence from intelligence. His quote, if accurate, should have said we have the 'intelligence' but the word evidence connotes a stronger meaning so would have been more appropriate." [3]"We believe the Iranians had a motive to attack an American plane and they may well have ordered the bombing, but the physical evidence only links Libya to the attack. Unfortunately it does not tie anyone else, only if we had an insider. It has been early 20 years and one would think that by now someone would have come out of the woodwork to make the claim if legitimate." [4]This writer thus suggested to Marquise that Western intelligence had access to an insider with superb knowledge of the Iranian intelligence apparatus. Marquise reply was, to say the least, disturbing."With regard to Mesbahi, I have never heard the name until reading it in your article. I have no idea who he is but guess the defense must have heard of him and wonder why he was not a key witness at trial. It seems, based on what you report, he has some significant info -- where -- what is it?? I have no way of knowing," Marquise wrote to me. [5] Read full story

Lockerbie: FBI Investigator Debates OMNI Reporter

My last OMNI piece on the Lockerbie bombing has generated quite a bit of discussion which I would like to share with our readers. Some letters were very complimentary. However, the story was heavily criticized by a well-informed reader. Richard Marquise, the former FBI agent, who led the Lockerbie task force, told me that the article contains many factual errors. [2] Allow me to review the position of both sides.

Upon completion of this article, I emailed the piece to Marquise who added a few additional comments. These appear in bold characters. [3]

The proponents

"Dr Ludwig de Braeckeleer has published a Lockerbie article under the headline Chronicle of a Death Foretold. It is concerned particularly with the warnings that were received before the destruction of Pan Am 103 and with how those warnings were responded to or not, as the case may be. The article is a mine of useful information on the Lockerbie tragedy and will be required reading for all who have an interest in the affair," wrote Pr Black, also known as the architect of the Lockerbie trial. [4]
Your article is correct... I have been convinced, since the accusation was made, that Megrahi was not guilty of the destruction of Pan Am 103," told me Charles Norrie who lost his brother in the bombing of UT-772, sometimes referred to as the French Lockerbie.
"Your last piece was very refreshing in that it drew attention back to some of the really meaty issues, such as who decided the attack must be made, who carried it out, and why was the flight not protected in view of all the warnings, which seemed to have been sufficient to lead to cancellations. Those are the issues that matter so much to us, wrote Dr Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the tragedy. [6] Read full story

Lockerbie: A Father Accuses

The Financial Times has confirmed that oil giant BP just ratified a 450-million-British-pound oil contract with Libya after UK politicians drafted a prisoner transfer agreement that, most certainly, covers the Libyan citizen convicted of the bombing of Pan Am 103 on Dec. 21 1988. OMNI reported the suspected deal last August.

British Petroleum's Board of Directors has suggested that their logo now stands for Beyond Petroleum. In the light of the above, some readers may react with skepticism to their suggestion. But one thing is certain. BP does not stand for British Pride.

Dr. Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora died in the Lockerbie tragedy, is co-founder of the UK Flight 103 Family and a regular spokesperson for the organization. Yesterday, he e-mailed me the following letter, which I want to share with my readers.

Lockerbie: Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Governments lie. They do it all the time. And, much as we'd like to believe otherwise, the US government is no exception. There were times when we may have believed otherwise. But after Vietnam and Watergate, we know better. -- The USS Vincennes: Public War, Secret War, July 1 1992, ABC News, Ted Koppel

In some sense, the true and enduring mystery of the Lockerbie bombing is why so few people died. If one is willing to accept the official version of the tragedy, is it not indeed a miracle that an airliner flying from London to New York at Christmas time was actually half booked?

Following the Vincennes attack, the Iranian Ambassador at the UN told the world in no ambiguous terms that Iran will seek revenge. In Tehran, Mostashemi, the Iranian Minister of the Interior, promised that the skies will rain blood.

Mostashemi, and top other Iranian officials, held a series of meetings in Beirut with several members of a well known organization, the PFLP-GC, led by Ahmed Jibril. Iran has colluded with the PFLP-GC before and after the Lockerbie bombing.

The PFLP-GC was the logical choice for several reasons. The Palestinian group operated in Lebanon under Syrian protection and enjoyed a special relation with Mostashemi who had been the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon in the 80s.

The organization had the know-how to manufacture timing devices involving an air-pressure switch for bombs to detonate aboard airplanes. Jibril had operating cells in Europe, including in Germany and Sweden. Last, but not least, Syrian drug Barron al Kasaar, and former associate of Oliver North, could easily bypass the security of Frankfurt airport, thanks to several baggage handlers working for his organization.

In September, Jibril sent Dalkamoni, his most trusted lieutenant, to Germany in order to organize a cell which, with the collaboration of another PFLP-GC cell from Sweden, had for mission to construct bomb specifically designed to destroy airliners. A few weeks later, Jibril ordered Khreesat, one of his two senior bomb-makers, to join Dalkamoni in Germany. Read full story

Confession of an Iranian Terror Czar

"In fact, the public has the right not only to justice but to protection. For if, as a consequence of incompetence or cynical realpolitik, the true culprits are not tracked down and prosecuted, they and their government sponsors are free to orchestrate further murderous outrages. And experience shows that this is precisely what they do." -- David Horovitz, The Jerusalem Post, October 11 2007

On May 24 2000, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCR) issued a press release claiming that Brigadier General Ahmad Beladi Behbahani had defected to Turkey. The NCR called upon the government of Turkey to put him under immediate arrest.

According to the NCR press release, Behbahani had been "President Rafsanjani's liaison with the Intelligence Ministry." The NCR alleged that Behbahani had first hand information about Tehran sponsored terrorism dating as far back as 1986.

Several Western observers grasped at once the importance of the defection. "If this man is Behbahani, then obviously he was a crucial figure in the intelligence set-up in Iran and his information would be extremely important," said Lord Avebury who had co-authored a 1996 report on Behbahani.

...

Connecting the DotsI find the statements of U.S., Iranian and Turkish officials concerning Behbahani highly suspicious, indeed contradictory at time. On the other hand, the allegations made by Behbahani and Mesbahi appear consistent, coherent and thus quite plausible.

In most cases, their allegations have in fact been backed up by Western and Israeli Intelligence. Their version of the events displays at time extraordinary similarities. The parallelism between the Lockerbie and the Buenos Aires affair is particularly striking. This raises a simple question. Where are Behbahani and Mesbahi? And why have we not heard from them since 2000?

If the U.S. State Department is willing to reward a Libyan mechanic employed by the JSO $4 million to fabricate bogus allegations, how much would they be willing to offer a Iranian General, Head of Intelligence Section of the President office, for not telling the truth? Read full story

The NSA-Crypto AG Sting

For decades, the US National Security Agency (NSA) has been reading effortlessly ultra sensitive messages intercepted from all parts of the world. This extraordinary feat was not the consequence of the work of some genius cyber mathematician. Nor was it the result of the agency dominance in the field of super computers, which allegedly have outpaced their most direct rivals by orders of magnitude. The truth is far simpler and quite troubling. The game was rigged.

On the Wikipedia page of Crypto AG, one can read: "Crypto AG rejected these accusations as pure invention, asserting in a press release that in March 1994, the Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office initiated a wide-ranging preliminary investigation against Crypto AG, which was completed in 1997. The accusations regarding influence by third parties or manipulations, which had been repeatedly raised in the media, proved to be without foundation."

However, meetings between a NSA cryptographer and Crypto AG personnel to discuss the design of new machines have been factually established. The story was also confirmed by former employees and is supported by company documents. Boris Hagelin is said to have acted out of idealism. What is certain is that the deal for Crypto AG was quite juicy. In return for rigging their machines, Crypto AG is understood to have been granted export licenses to all entities controlled by the NSA. Read full story

US Media Breaks Silence Over Lockerbie

Jeff Stein, the national security editor of the Congressional Quarterly Web site, CQ Politics, outlines the problems with the official US-U.K. version of the Lockerbie bombing. Quotes from US security and intelligence operatives confirm the stories reported by OhmyNews International.

"After the verdict convicting Megrahi, I provided leads to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission [SCCRC], which tracked down specific transactions between Iran and the PFLP operatives," Baer told Stein.I understand that Baer told the SCCRC that an $11 million payment was received by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) on or about Dec. 23, 1988, evidenced by a credit to a bank in Lausanne, Switzerland, and that the payment was moved from there to another PFLP-GC account at the Banque Nationale de Paris, and thence to the Hungarian development bank.Muhammad Hafiz Dalkamoni is a trusted collaborator of Amhed Jibril, the head and founder of the PFLP-GC. In fact, Dalkamoni is known as Jibril's right hand man. Jibril ordered him to go to Germany in the fall of 1988. Dalkamoni was highly rewarded for his services to the "Islamic revolutionary struggle against the West." The Iranian citation praises Dalkamoni for achieving the greatest-ever strike against the West. Dalkamoni was arrested during Operation Autumn Leaves. The Paris account number was found in his possession. Read full story

Lockerbie: Crown Refuses to Reveal Secret Documents

On Oct. 11, the procedural hearing for the second appeal of the Libyan convicted for the Lockerbie bombing opened at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh. This first hearing since the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) decided to grant Abdelbaset Al Megrahi a second appeal lasted about one hour.During this hearing, Maggie Scott QC (Queen's Counsel) requested to have disclosed secret foreign documents that were provided to the Crown on the condition that their content would not be disclosed.

The Crown is represented by a team headed by Ronnie Clancy QC. "The documents in question were passed to the U.K. government on the basis that they were regarded as being confidential by the authority that passed them over," Clancy said."That being so, the Crown has always taken the position that, if possible, confidentiality should be respected and there are public interest considerations in regard to keeping the confidentiality of information that comes from a foreign source," Clancy added. Lockerbie Defense Demands Documents

On Thursday, the procedural hearing for the second appeal of the Libyan convicted for the Lockerbie bombing opened at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh. This first hearing since the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) decided to grant Abdelbaset Al Megrahi a second appeal lasted about one hour.
The judges [1] were Lord Hamilton (the Lord Justice General), Lord Kingarth and Lord Eassie. Megrahi, the only person convicted of murdering the 270 people who died in the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie on Dec. 21, 1988, was represented by a team headed by Maggie Scott QC (Queen's Counsel). The Crown was represented by a team headed by Ronnie Clancy QC.
Scott requested to have disclosed secret documents. The Crown was shown these foreign secret documents on the condition that their content would not be disclosed. The nondisclosure agreement was signed by Norman McFadyen, then one of the leading members of the prosecution, on June 1, 2000.
"The documents in question were passed to the U.K. government on the basis that they were regarded as being confidential by the authority that passed them over," Clancy said." That being so, the Crown has always taken the position that, if possible, confidentiality should be respected and there are public interest considerations in regard to keeping the confidentiality of information that comes from a foreign source," Clancy added.
"The withholding of evidence by the investigators and the prosecution from the defense at the Lockerbie court is a serious breach of the fundamental norms of a fair trial," Hans Koechler told Gordon Brewer of the BCC's "Newsnight Scotland.
"The nondisclosure of this information to the defense is one of the grounds that the SCCRC has identified as reasons for holding that a miscarriage of justice might have occurred. The prosecutors have refused to make public the ultra secret document on the basis of national security.
"It is shocking to me that after 19 years of trying to get to the truth about who murdered my daughter national security is being used as an excuse," said Jim Swire. Read full story

Lockerbie investigator disputes story

On Sept. 7, the agent who led the Lockerbie investigation for the FBI wrote to me and criticized the article on several grounds, but most importantly, he alleged that the Lumpert affidavit was a "total fabrication."Richard Marquise led the U.S. task force that investigated the Lockerbie bombing. He has authored a book on the subject: Scotbom: Evidence and the Lockerbie Investigation. He wrote to me:

Lumpert's new statement is a total fabrication. He was interviewed several times, including at a judicial hearing in Switzerland as well as the trial itself and he never wavered in his story. His statement that he gave a "stolen timer" to a Scottish officer in 1989 does not even fit the timeline since we had no idea about the origins of PT-35 at that time. We identified MeBo in the summer of 1990.
With all due respect, I must state very unambiguously that I remain convinced that the document is authentic and that the story is not a hoax. Moreover, I have obtained a document that strongly suggests that the timeline of the events related to the identification of the MST-13 timer has been fabricated. Read Full story

Key Lockerbie Witness Admits Perjury

"I confirm today on July 18, 2007, that I stole the third hand-manufactured MST-13 timer PC-board consisting of eight layers of fiber-glass from MEBO Ltd. and gave it without permission on June 22, 1989, to a person officially investigating in the Lockerbie case," Lumpert wrote. (The identity of the official is known.)

"It did not escape me that the MST-13 fragment shown [at the Lockerbie trial] on the police photograph No. PT/35(b) came from the nonoperational MST-13 prototype PC-board that I had stolen," Lumpert added.

"I am sorry for the consequences of my silence at that time, for the innocent Libyan Mr. Abdelbaset Al Megrahi sentenced to life imprisonment, and for the country of Libya."

In just seven paragraphs, the Lumpert affidavit elucidates the longstanding mysteries surrounding the infamous MST-13 timer, which allegedly triggered the bomb that exploded Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie on Dec. 21, 1988. Read full story

Libya Foreign Medics Swapped for Lockerbie

Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libya leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, told the French newspaper Le Monde that the six health workers, held in Libya for nearly a decade for allegedly having infected hundreds of children with HIV, have been released in exchange for the transfer to Libya of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi.In January 2001, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was convicted in a special court located in the Netherlands under Scottish rules for the murder of 270 people who died in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. Megrahi is serving a life sentence in a Scottish prison.
"We will soon have an extradition agreement with the UK. Our diplomats have discussed the matter with their British counterparts last month," Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi said. Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi sought the interview, held on Tuesday in a luxurious hotel located in the French city of Nice, to "clarify a few issues." He told the French journalists that he never believed that the six Health workers wereguilty. "Unfortunately, they were mere scapegoats," he stated calmly. "This time around, we got a good deal. It is a complicated story, a huge mess. There are lots of players. And it was necessary to please all of them." According to General Kirtcho Kirov, the head of Bulgarian secret services, Intelligences Agencies of about 20 countries have been involved in the deal. Kirov explicitly mentioned the UK, Italy, Israel, the Palestinian Authorities, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco as well as Bulgaria and Libya. Read fulll story

Wikipedia and the Intelligence Services

In the aftermath of the Lockerbie bombing in 1988, the finger of suspicion quickly pointed to a Syria-based Palestinian organization -- the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, General Command (PFLP-GC) -- hired by Iran. The terrorist group was created by a former Syrian army captain, Ahmed Jibril, who broke away from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in 1968.I had learned from a recently released U.S. National Archives file that Shin Bet, the Israeli Security Agency, had infiltrated the PFLP and helped the Entebbe hijackers (Israeli commandos rescued the hostages in Uganda in 1976), so I wanted to learn more about the link between the PFLP and the PFLP-GC. I also wanted to learn more about allegations made by David Colvin, the first secretary of the British Embassy in Paris, concerning the rather bizarre collaboration between the PFLP and the Shin Bet.
As I could not locate the article in which I had learned about the allegations, I consulted the article on the Entebbe Operation on Wikipedia, where I knew the story had been noted. To my surprise, I found that all references to the alleged collaboration between the PFLP and the Shin Bet had been suppressed. Moreover, it is no longer possible to edit the page. Read full text
